Extension of Milan’s M1 Metro Line: construction works underway
04 March 20262026 continues to mark another milestone for Itinera: construction works for the extension of Milan’s M1 metro line from Bisceglie to Baggio officially began on February 25. The project includes three new stations – Parri-Valsesia, Baggio and Olmi – and 3.3 kilometers of fully underground track, extending service to the south-west quadrant of the city and surrounding suburban municipalities. The area to be served is among the most densely populated in the Milan hinterland: approximately 60,000 people live within a 1.5 km radius of the new stations.
The project, with an expected duration of five and a half years and a total value of €362 million funded by the State and the Municipality, is being carried out by the Temporary Consortium of Companies (RTI) led by Consorzio Eteria (Itinera, Vianini Lavori and ICOP), together with Ghella and CMB. Construction supervision has been entrusted to MM S.p.A.
The new section will start from the existing turnback track at Bisceglie and will be excavated almost entirely using a TBM to minimize surface disruption. The stations, located approximately 16 meters underground, will feature innovative solutions, including advanced fire safety technologies and BIM methodology for integrated lifecycle management of the infrastructure.
The project’s figures are significant: an estimated 7.5 million passengers per year are expected across the three new stations, with a projected reduction of 14.8 million kilometers of private vehicle traffic (85% of which cars) and 3.5 million additional metro journeys. Environmental benefits include more than 3,500 tonnes of CO₂ saved annually, along with enhanced cycling connections to the stations.
The project also includes extensive urban and environmental redevelopment: new green areas, tree planting, depaving interventions, 108,000 square meters of lawns and covered bicycle racks. With this extension, Line 1 will reach a total of 43 stations over approximately 32 kilometers.
