Grosseto–Fano State Street 223, section IV: a project to enhance regional mobility
15 December 2025Work is progressing on the upgrading of State Road SS223 Grosseto–Fano, which includes Section IV “Grosseto–Siena”, where Itinera is operating. The project represents a strategic intervention to enhance road connectivity between Tuscany and the Marche region.
Section IV involves the construction of a new carriageway in the Siena direction and the complete upgrading of the existing carriageway towards Grosseto, which currently carries two-way traffic. Upon completion of the works, the road will take on its final configuration with 2+2 lanes separated by a central median.
The main works include the construction of eight steel-deck viaducts. Four of these will be newly built along the alignment of the new road, while the remaining four will be constructed on the existing alignment following the complete demolition of the current structures, carried out by explosive demolition. The project also includes two tunnels: the first, approximately 500 metres long, will be newly constructed, while the second will be upgraded to current standards through works on a section of about 100 metres. The project is completed by the construction of retaining works using gabions and reinforced earth, as well as naturalistic, hydraulic and plant engineering works.
The project also places strong emphasis on technology: advanced structural and environmental monitoring systems are included, enabling continuous control of the infrastructure both during the construction phase and throughout subsequent operation.
