Itinera Group to build a new section of the New York City subway
04 September 2025The Itinera Group, through its subsidiary Halmar International, will design and build a new section of the Second Avenue Subway in New York, between 116th and 125th Street. Designed to improve mobility for thousands of people every day, the project represents an important step toward the sustainability of urban transport in the city. With a total value of $1.9 billion, it is the largest tunneling contract in the history of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the agency that manages the largest transit network in North America.
The project includes the construction of two parallel tunnels, excavating a cavern for the future 125th Street Station, and outfitting a tunnel along the route, built in the 1970s, to accommodate the future 116th Street Station. Two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be used for the tunnel excavation to tackle the complex geological and logistical conditions, ensuring precision and safety throughout all operational phases.
The Group is highly active in the United States in both the EPC sector, thus strengthens its presence in a strategic market by delivering high-impact infrastructure for communities.
Among its completed EPC projects are the Long Island Rail Road Third Track Expansion in New York and the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station in Alexandria, Virgina. Current major projects in the New York area include the Penn Station Access project, the replacement of the Park Avenue Viaduct, the redevelopment of several areas of the JFK International Airport and the design and build project for the realization of the Potomac River tunnel in Washington, D.C.
