Stockholm Metro Project: Escalator Shafts Completed

Itinera has successfully completed all six escalator shafts for the new stations of Arenastaden–Södra Hagalund and Hammarby Kanal, part of the Stockholm metro expansion project. This milestone is the result of complex activities that required bespoke engineering solutions.

At Hammarby Kanal, the unique feature lies in the construction of the station beneath a canal. After completing the rock excavation, the team installed 380 tons of prefabricated stair elements: 76 components weighing approximately 5 tons each, completed in just 17 working days.

At Arenastaden, due to the extremely steep slope, a different excavation technique was adopted. With a 55% inclination—comparable to one of Sweden’s steepest ski slopes—the operation began with an inclined raise boring excavation, followed by drilling and blasting works, demanding highly specialized technical expertise.

The shafts range in length from 30 to 67 meters, underscoring the complexity and scale of the works.

“Escalator shafts are among the most complex elements of the project due to their steep inclination. I’m happy and proud to share that we have successfully completed the rock excavation of all our shafts, safely and without incidents,” says Project Director Frida Hesselgren. “Concrete pouring on such slopes is also a significant challenge. At Hammarby Kanal, we got off to a great start with the installation of the prefabricated stairs, while at Solna we will soon begin the concrete works”.

Itinera was awarded the two contracts in March 2022 as part of the Stockholm metro network upgrade. Our team is working daily to efficiently complete these key components of Stockholm’s future mobility.
