Water security for the Campania Region: TBM “Falanghina” launched
12 September 2025On September 10, at the Campolattaro Dam (BN) construction site, the kick-off event was held for the works aimed at securing water resources for the Campania Region. Among the attendees were the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and Governor Vincenzo De Luca.
The launch of TBM “Falanghina” marks the first step towards the creation of a strategic water system for the entire region.
Itinera, through the Campolattaro Scarl Consortium in partnership with Ghella, RDR, Idroambiente, and Tunnel Pro, is responsible for the design and execution of two of the project’s three lots, which include:
- Derivation tunnel, 7.5 km long and 5 m in diameter
- Water treatment plant with a maximum capacity of 3,000 l/s and a 30,000 m³ storage tank
- 110 km of pipelines, with diameters ranging from 400 to 1,800 mm, supporting the Beneventano aqueducts
- Hydroelectric plant for self-generation of energy
The project, classified as a strategic national intervention under the PNRR (Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan). It will provide drinking water to over 2.5 million residents and irrigate approximately 15,000 hectares of farmland.
This is a crucial step to ensure water independence for Campania and to enhance one of the main reservoirs in Central-Southern Italy, which has remained unfinished since the 1960s.
