11 Jun 2025 A new milestone for the Odense University Hospital: three bridges launched over the Letbane light rail
A new and important step has been taken in the construction of the future Odense University Hospital: the three steel bridges crossing the Letbane light rail line, which will serve the facility, have been successfully installed.
Fully assembled at ground level and pre-clad with their external shell, the bridges were launched into place with remarkable precision during scheduled rail shutdowns across three consecutive Sundays — May 4th, 11th, and 18th, 2025. A 750-ton crawler crane was used for the operation, enabling the safe and accurate installation of the heavy steel structures.
This achievement goes far beyond engineering. By connecting the east and west wings of the hospital, the bridges redefine both the appearance and the functionality of the entire facility. They ensure the continuity of internal circulation, a critical element both during construction and once the hospital becomes fully operational.
Two of the three bridges are double-level pedestrian walkways, each measuring 46 meters in length and 5.5 meters in width. They were installed in two sections: one 27.1 meters long weighing 160 tons, and another 18.9 meters long weighing 100 tons. The third bridge is a single-level structure of equal length but narrower at 4 meters, with sections weighing 100 and 70 tons respectively.
This extraordinary result was made possible by the determination, technical expertise, and team spirit of everyone involved. A special thanks goes to all those who contributed to this major milestone: Odense Hospital Project Team JV, Det nye OUH, CMB Società Cooperativa Muratori e Braccianti di Carpi, Itinera, and Itinera Denmark. Today, those bridges are no longer just a plan — they are a reality.
