A33 Asti-Cuneo Highway: Nighttime Bridge Launch on the SP7 Viaduct
08 August 2025Assembly works are progressing on the SP7 Viaduct, a key and central engineering structure of the A33 Asti-Cuneo motorway connection. During the night between August 7th and 8th, a metal deck segment weighing approximately 290 tonnes was successfully launched over the Provincial Road SP7.
The segment, measuring 49.90 metres in length, was preassembled on the ground in a nearby site area and lifted into place using a slow aerial rotation maneuver between piers 5 and 6 (Asti-bound direction). The beam was installed with metal formwork panels (predalles) already in place, in order to minimize disruption to traffic during the subsequent casting of the concrete deck slab.
The SP7 Viaduct is designed with two separate steel-concrete composite decks, built as open box girders spanning eight variable-length spans.
It extends for a total length of 399.65 metres towards Asti and 404.20 metres towards Cuneo, supported by seven Y-shaped reinforced concrete piers, ranging in height from 9.4 to 10.9 metres, with deep foundation systems using bored piles.
The successful launch marks a crucial milestone in the construction of the new viaduct, enabling the crossing of the existing SP7 road, and forms part of Itinera’s broader commitment to delivering this strategic infrastructure project for the Piedmont region and north-western Italy.
