Gravagna Viaduct: reconstruction works continue along the A15 Parma–La Spezia Motorway
10 July 2026Reconstruction works on the northbound carriageway of the Gravagna Viaduct, along the A15 Parma–La Spezia motorway, are progressing steadily. The motorway is one of the main transport corridors connecting the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany regions. Carried out by Itinera on behalf of motorway concessionaire SALT, the project is a strategic investment aimed at enhancing the safety, reliability and durability of a key infrastructure asset dating back to the 1970s, which plays a vital role in central Italy’s transport network.
Launched in autumn 2023, the works have been carefully planned to keep the motorway open to traffic throughout the construction period. The project involves the demolition and reconstruction of the two carriageways in successive phases, avoiding the complete closure of the viaduct. In addition, a dynamic traffic management system ensures that two lanes always remain available in the direction of peak traffic flow, minimising disruption to road users.
Following the completion of the demolition of the northbound carriageway – a phase marked by the controlled demolition of the three steel arches supporting the bridge deck – the project has now entered its main construction stage. Works are currently focused on casting the upper deck slab of the new bridge, a key milestone towards the completion of the structure.
The progress achieved so far highlights the scale of the project: more than 1,500 tonnes of weathering (CORTEN) steel have been installed, over 300 tonnes of greased and sheathed unbonded prestressing strands have been used for deck prestressing, more than 1,500 tonnes of B450 reinforcing steel have been placed, and over 7,900 cubic metres of structural concrete have been poured.
Once completed, the project will have required more than 10,500 cubic metres of concrete, 2,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel and approximately 2 kilometres of new safety barriers, delivering a modern, more resilient infrastructure designed to meet today’s highest standards of safety and durability.
