Itinera awarded Lot 4 of the A8 “Unirii” Motorway in Romania

The Joint Venture formed by Itinera, as lead partner, Saipem and ICM has been awarded the contract for the design and construction of Lot 4 of the A8 “Unirii” Motorway in Romania by Compania Națională de Investiții Rutiere (CNIR), the Romanian national company responsible for road infrastructure investments.

The contract was signed on Thursday, 2 July, in Bucharest at the Romanian Government headquarters, in the presence of Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, and Giorgio Bernasconi of Itinera, representing the Joint Venture.

The project involves the construction of a motorway section approximately 21 kilometres long, including around 5 kilometres within the territory of the Republic of Moldova, connecting the city of Iași with the Moldovan border. The works include approximately 14 structures, including bridges, viaducts and underpasses, three interchanges, a 500-metre cut-and-cover tunnel and a twin-bore tunnel approximately 1.7 kilometres long.

The project is a key section of the wider A8 Motorway, which will connect Târgu Neamț, Iași and Ungheni along a route of more than 300 kilometres. As part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the infrastructure will strengthen connections between Central and Eastern Europe.

For Itinera, this contract award confirms its proven expertise in delivering major transport infrastructure projects and further strengthens the company’s presence in Romania, where it has already completed significant road infrastructure projects, including the Satu Mare Ring Road and the Bucharest Ring Road.
