Itinera’s Expertise at the World Tunnel Congress 2025 – both on stage and on site

From May 12 to 15, the World Tunnel Congress 2025 was held in Stockholm, a leading event in the tunneling sector that brought together over 3,100 participants from 70 countries. Itinera, currently involved in two major metro extension projects in the Swedish capital — Hammarby Canal and Arenastaden–Södra Hagalund — took part in the technical program with a presentation by Project Manager Antonio Cavallaro.
His contribution focused on an innovative 30-degree inclined raiseboring technique used to construct future metro station entrances, specifically the escalator tunnels. This method enabled the excavation of shafts with a remarkable 5-meter diameter. The work then continued using the traditional drill & blast method, with equipment specially adapted to operate on steep gradients.

WTC participants also had the opportunity to visit some of Stockholm’s most significant infrastructure projects, including Itinera’s Hammarby Canal construction site. Visitors entered the tunnel to observe the progress of this unique project — the only Stockholm metro station located beneath a canal.

The WTC 2025 highlighted Sweden’s role as a global leader in tunneling. Itinera is honored to contribute to the development of infrastructure in a country renowned for its engineering excellence and its strong culture of innovation.
