San Lorenzo Viaduct demolished: another achievement on the Grosseto–Siena State Road upgrade

Another key milestone has been reached on the State Road 223 Grosseto–Siena. Following the controlled demolition of the “La Coscia” viaduct last April, the “San Lorenzo” viaduct was successfully demolished on 30 June as part of the ongoing upgrade of this strategic transport corridor in Tuscany.

The operation, planned by ANAS and safely executed by Itinera and Monaco, involved the demolition of the former 167-metre-long viaduct, which had been decommissioned following the opening to traffic of the new parallel structure. The demolition was carried out using a controlled blasting technique involving 89 kg of explosives.

This operation marks another significant milestone in Lot 4 of the Grosseto–Siena State Road upgrading project, which will expand the road to two lanes in each direction, improving safety, traffic capacity and overall traffic flow along one of the region’s main transport corridors.

The project, carried out on behalf of ANAS, covers a 3-kilometre section between the already upgraded Civitella and Lampugnano interchanges. In addition to replacing the viaduct, the works include the upgrading of a total of eight viaducts, the construction of two natural tunnels, and numerous civil engineering and slope stabilization works, contributing to the overall enhancement of the entire road corridor.
