Slope stabilization works at the “Valera Trench” on the A6 Torino–Savona Motorway

Itinera is continuing slope stabilization works at the so-called “Valera Trench” along the A6 Torino–Savona motorway (km 86+200), between the Ceva and Millesimo interchanges, in the direction of Savona. The intervention was launched following the heavy rainfall of 26–27 October 2024, which triggered alarm thresholds in the monitoring systems and led to the temporary closure of the carriageway. The project involves a total investment of €10.4 million and is scheduled for completion by November 2026.

The works include the construction of new retaining structures at both the upper and lower parts of the slope, the installation of a reticulated soil nailing system, slope reprofiling, and the reconstruction of the stormwater drainage system.

The project features significant figures: bored piles with a diameter of 1,000 mm, over 8,000 metres of micropiles, and 12,000 metres of ground anchors; more than 15,000 m³ of earthworks and 1,500 m³ of reinforced concrete demolition; 300,000 kg of steel for micropiles and 500,000 kg of reinforcement steel.

An active monitoring system will also be installed, including inclinometers, piezometers, interferometric radar, crack meters, multiparametric sensors, and automatic alert systems connected to the 24/7 Operations Control Center of Autostrada dei Fiori.

The intervention is being carried out in collaboration with the Civil Protection Operations Center, the University of Florence, the Politecnico di Torino, and Sina, the engineering company of ASTM.
