State Road 223 “Grosseto-Siena”: new viaduct launching operations completed

The launching operations for the new Lanzo Viaduct, one of the main structures included in Lot 4 of the upgrade works along the SS223 Grosseto-Siena State Road, in Tuscany, have been successfully completed.

The project, carried out by Itinera and Monaco on behalf of ANAS, commenced in mid-April 2026. Throughout the works, the construction activities were characterised by a high degree of technical complexity, requiring precision, close coordination and careful management of the various construction phases. Following this four-month launching operation, the bridge deck has now reached its final position.

The new Lanzo Viaduct consists of three spans measuring 55 m, 85 m and 92.5 m, respectively, for a total length of 232.5 m.

The completion of the launching operation represents much more than a simple milestone in the progress of the works. It marks the point at which elements that were designed, fabricated and moved separately are brought together in their final position, becoming part of a single infrastructure and a key link within Tuscany’s transport network.

The construction of the viaduct involved significant quantities of materials and major construction activities, including 4,738.28 m³ of bulk excavation, 3,864.68 m³ of structural concrete, 456 tonnes of B450C reinforcing steel bars, and 1,519.12 tonnes of self-weathering structural steel used for the main girders.

At the same time, the newly constructed tunnel was connected to the viaduct, establishing physical continuity along the new alignment. The main structures forming the new road corridor are therefore now interconnected, giving tangible form to an infrastructure developed through separate yet closely integrated construction activities.
