Stockholm Metro expansion project: blasting activities completed

A new major milestone has been achieved in the Stockholm Metro expansion project (Nya Tunnelbanan). On March 26, Region Stockholm – the client – hosted an event together with project partners, including Itinera, to celebrate the completion of all blasting activities. The initiative included a tunnel site visit, with stops at key locations such as the breakthrough point and the future Hagastaden station, offering stakeholders and media a first-hand view of the project’s progress.

The project involves the extension of the metro network with new lines, stations and over 20 km of new tracks, with the aim of improving urban mobility and supporting the city’s growth. Itinera plays a leading role: in 2022, the company was awarded two contracts for the construction of new metro sections, in a complex and highly sensitive urban environment.

Excavation and blasting activities represent one of the most critical phases of the entire project. The first blast took place in Veddesta on April 3, 2019; between 2021 and 2022, works reached their operational peak with more than 40 sections active simultaneously. In total, approximately 21,500 blasts were carried out, culminating in the final operation at the connection point between Solna and Stockholm.

These achievements highlight the high level of technical expertise and the strong collaboration among all project partners—key elements for operating in a complex urban environment while ensuring safety, sustainability and continuity of city activities.

The completion of blasting activities marks a decisive step towards the development of Stockholm’s future metro network, contributing to improving transport system capacity and the quality of urban mobility in the Swedish capital.
