Storstrøm Bridge inaugurated in Denmark, a flagship project for Itinera
08 June 2026The new Storstrøm Bridge in Denmark was officially inaugurated and named after Queen Margrethe II of Denmark on June 6, in the presence of Minister of Transport Signe Munk and Crown Prince Christian.
Constructed by Itinera, the project is a strategic infrastructure within the Scandinavian–Mediterranean European corridor, connecting the Zealand region with the island of Falster.
With a total length of approximately 3,800 meters, the bridge is the third longest in Denmark and integrates a high-speed railway line, a dual carriageway road, and a pedestrian and cycle path.
The construction involved advanced technical solutions, including the use of prefabricated elements assembled on site and the adoption of innovative technologies to enhance the sustainability and durability of the structure.
The project figures are equally significant: the overall infrastructure consists of two access viaducts totaling approximately 3.5 km, one cable-stayed bridge featuring two 160-meter spans, and a central pylon rising 102 meters above sea level. Construction required the movement of 1.4 million cubic meters of excavated soil, as well as the use of 153,000 cubic meters of concrete and over 43,000 tonnes of steel. More than 1,000 people from 27 different nationalities were involved in the project.
The project team successfully tackled numerous engineering and operational challenges, including those related to road and rail dynamic loads, wind forces, potential ship impacts, and the construction of a bridge in the middle of the Baltic Sea. Its location within a major wind corridor, combined with the extreme weather conditions consistently encountered over the years, posed unprecedented challenges for the workforce.
