The new water management system serving Turin
04 August 2025The Joint Venture formed by Itinera and Ghella is working on the “Idropolitana”, the new major sewer infrastructure designed by SMAT to strengthen and make the wastewater collection and transfer system more resilient. This is a strategic project serving the City of Turin and 20 municipalities in the southern quadrant of the Metropolitan City, conceived to tackle the environmental challenges of the coming decades.
The project, launched with the handover of the construction site in September 2023, involves the construction of a collector approximately 14 km long, consisting of a tunnel with an external diameter of 4 meters, excavated at a depth of over 20 meters.
The infrastructure represents a duplication of the existing inter-municipal collector, which has been in operation for over forty years, and will allow for its temporary deactivation for extraordinary maintenance work. Thanks to its role in regulating rainwater flow, the new median collector will be crucial in managing extreme weather events, contributing to the mitigation of climate change effects.
The construction is divided into two main sections, employing two different excavation techniques: the first, approximately 2.5 km long, will use microtunneling; the second, around 9.5 km, will be excavated using a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine).
The Idropolitana is a forward-looking project that concretely responds to the needs of the region and future generations.
