Tuscany, State Road 1 “Aurelia”: Itinera completes launching of a new bridge
10 June 2026Itinera has successfully completed the launching of the deck of the new bridge over the Scolmatore Canal, along the State Road 1 “Aurelia” in Livorno, as part of the upgrading project promoted by ANAS (FS Italiane), the contracting authority.
The project is part of a broader programme of scheduled maintenance, seismic upgrading and functional enhancement of the infrastructure, aimed at increasing its safety, durability and overall performance.
The bridge has a total length of 158 metres and consists of five spans of approximately 32 metres each. Following the demolition of the previous reinforced concrete deck, Itinera fabricated and installed the new steel structures, weighing approximately 49 tonnes per span. The girders were assembled at ground level and subsequently lifted using heavy-duty cranes for placement onto the piers, completing one of the most technically complex phases of the entire construction process.
The new deck is designed as a continuous composite steel-concrete structure, an engineering solution that significantly improves the structure’s static and dynamic performance, while reducing typical issues associated with traditional systems, such as the presence of expansion joints between spans.
The works also included the structural rehabilitation of the existing piers, the seismic upgrading of the abutments, and the replacement of the bearings with new-generation seismic devices.
The completion of the launching phase now allows the project to proceed with the subsequent construction activities, with completion scheduled for August 2026.
