08 Apr 2025 Upgrading of the Rome – Pescara railway line: work begins, Itinera at the forefront
An official ceremony marked the start of the enhancement works on the Pescara–Rome railway line, attended by the President of the Abruzzo Region, Marco Marsilio, the CEO of the Consorzio Eteria, Vincenzo Onorato, the CEO of RFI, Aldo Isi, and the Government Commissioner for the project, Vincenzo Macello.
The project, commissioned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Italian Railway Network – part of the FS Group), involves the first two functional lots of the railway doubling along the Interporto d’Abruzzo – Scafa section, with a total investment of approximately €559 million.
The works have been entrusted to the Temporary Grouping of Companies formed by the Consorzio Eteria, of which Itinera is a member, and Salcef.
Project details: Lot 1 involves the doubling of the railway line between Interporto d’Abruzzo and Manoppello (approximately 5 km), including the construction of new railway embankments, five viaducts, one electrical substation, and the upgrading of Manoppello station.
Lot 2 covers the Manoppello – Scafa section (approximately 8 km) and includes the construction of seven viaducts, the resolution of critical infrastructure challenges such as the crossing of the A25 motorway and the Pescara river, as well as the redevelopment of Scafa and Alanno stations.
The overall project aims to enhance the transversal railway connection between Abruzzo, Rome, and the Adriatic corridor, reducing travel time between Rome and Pescara from the current 3.5 hours to approximately 2 hours, increasing the line’s capacity from 4 to 10 trains per hour, and promoting the development of freight transport by rail.
