19 Jun 2023 Catania Node awarded, interventions to enhance connections to the airport
ETERIA Consortium, of which ITINERA is a member, wins the design and construction of works for the Catania Node. The integrated contract promoted by RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana), with a total value of 370 million euros, includes a series of modifications to the existing rail and road infrastructures, necessary to carry out the extension of the runway at Catania’s Fontanarossa airport and upgrade the transportation hub.
The main activity consists of undergrounding the railway section interfering with the runway extension through the construction of 915 m of artificial tunnel and 785 m of approach trenches.
The project, which has a duration of 3 years, also includes the modification of the Catania-Siracusa link route with an overpass of the Buttaceto River, the construction of a new stretch for direct connections between Syracuse and Palermo, a new freight terminal in the current facility and the expansion of the Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa station with the construction of a third track.
Works are located on the edge of the suburban area of Catania, adjacent to Fontanarossa Airport, in Sicily.
