Itinera: one year into the Stockholm Metro Expansion Project

In March 2022 Itinera was awarded two contracts in Sweden to build two new sections of the Stockholm subway, valued at 225 million euros: Arenastaden – Södra Hagalund and Hammarby Canal. The project for the expansion of the Stockholm underground is promoted and led by Region Stockholm.

One year into the project, 1668 meters have been excavated in Södra Hagalund, and 677 meters in Arenastaden. At the beginning of next year, the first breakthrough will occur, and during 2024, the tunnels will meet, resulting in a total length of 6 kilometers from Arenastaden to Södra Hagalund. In addition to the tunnel, Itinera will complete four entrances, two at each station.

“It’s a challenging project in an urban environment, where we must take into consideration that we are working in proximity of residential areas, a major hospital, and other sensitive installations” says Antonio Cavallaro, Project manager. “A substantial part of the tunnels lies directly under an existing busy railway, and we have station entrances that are situated very close to high-rise buildings and a tram station. The works are moving forward and knowing that this will lead to improved urban services in this beautiful city is a source of great satisfaction for us.”
