Skurubron project: “success case” of bridge-building in Sweden

Itinera, on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration Trafikverket, is building a new bridge over the Skuru Sound in the municipality of Nacka, east of Stockholm. In addition to constructing a new infrastructure alongside the existing bridge, which will be converted into a local road and pedestrian and bicycle path, the project includes the reconstruction of the Skuru and Björknäs interchanges.

The new bridge, with 360 m of total length and 32 m of width, consists of five spans, of which the main is 99 m long, and crosses the Skuru Sound, a narrow and logistically strategic route connecting the central and southern parts of the Stockholm archipelago.

The work stands out to similar projects built in Sweden in recent years for its extraordinary design and high quality of workmanship. The infrastructure, which opened to traffic in both directions in July, has 3 lanes in each direction unlike the old bridge, which had only two lanes, whose construction dates back to 1915. This will result in greater fluidity and safety to traffic flows that have increased over time.

This project, started in 2019, marks Itinera’s first venture in Sweden, as well as the first opportunity for collaboration with Trafikverket. The collaboration has been highly successful, and as proof of this, the project was highlighted as a good example during Trafikverket’s Supplier Day held last Friday, September 28, where our Area Manager, Lars Henriksen, was interviewed alongside the Client’s Project Manager in a live broadcast. As the contractor for the work, we at Itinera are proud to be part of this historic bridge-building endeavour.
